The Micmac Rights Association is organization which advocates for the inherent and sovereign rights of the Micmac people. We support the self-organization and self-regulation of the Micmac economy on a sovereign basis in accordance with Micmac custom and convention. We uphold and defend Micmac people exercising their inherent rights to economic self-determination and oppose the colonial system imposed by Canada’s racist Indian Act.
Note: We use the older spelling of “Micmac” rather the more recently introduced “Mi’kmaq” spelling in accordance with a request made at our founding meeting by former National Chief of the Atlantic Region and Putus Hector Pictou, who explained that it was only after the Marshall decision, that Micmac became spelled as Mi’kmaq. According to Putus, “The term Micmac is ours. It didn’t come from a court transcript, it’s an every day way to spell our identity, and it’s the name on treaties that were signed with our sovereign ancestors.”
